“BOO!”
(Couldn’t resist. No matter how long I live, I always enjoy celebrating Halloween!)
What’s been amazing to me, over my lifetime, is the way the holiday has evolved.
When I was a (shorter) kid, it was simply a few cardboard witches, a pumpkin on your porch and, perhaps, a boxed costume from the local five-and-dime. (Which just shows you how long ago that was! I’m imagining anyone under 40 saying, “Huh? What’s a ‘five-and-dime’?”) And that was it!
Today? All kinds of elaborate costumes for all ages, elaborate haunted venues in varying degrees of “scary”, and special events, including conventions, for everyone who loves the scary season!
Similarly amazing, and a little scary, is just how close Christmas now seems to be, once those pumpkins start showing up.

Seven weeks used to seem much longer!
I’ve already received communications about several special Christmas events, which I look forward to sharing–after the pumpkins are put away.
For now, though, if you’re in the Long Beach area, you might like to check out the 25th annual Haute Dog Howl’oween Parade.

One of numerous community events hosted throughout the year by Justin Rudd’s 501c3 nonprofit Community Action Team, the Howl’oween Parade is a blast–or a howl, if you prefer.
The parade starts at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon in Marina Vista Park, and it’s free to spectate. (However, you may reserve a front-row chair for $6, cash.)
This is a rain-or-shine event, and if you’d like to enter your dog today, online registration ends at 11 this morning. Here’s the link for information.
After 11? You can still register onsite; at-event registration opens at 12:30, and is $20 per dog.
There will also be a vendor fair, with a pet adoptions, from 12:30 to 4:00 pm.
Meanwhile, have a very Happy Halloween! Hope it’s full of your favorite candy, a good Stephen King novel and a lot of fun.
