Amid the horror and grief following 9/11, multiple stories emerged.
Their common theme: incredible kindness, bravery and unity.
This October, A Noise Within brings one of those stories to life, onstage.
The award-winning Broadway musical Come From Away is based on the true story of the people of Gander, Newfoundland.
Following the terror attacks, thousands of air travelers were stranded outside the United States. Thirty-eight planes were forced to land at Gander International Airport.
The small Newfoundland town welcomed seven thousand strangers as friends.
In less than a week, the visitors were family.
Directed by Julia Rodriguez-Elliott, with music direction by Rod Bagheri, performances of Come From Away run Saturday, October 10 through Sunday, November 1.

A season of “angels”
Come From Away is the second production in A Noise Within’s 35th-anniversary season, themed “Those Better Angels”.
An exploration of the power of empathy and compassion, this season’s upcoming shows also include Neil Bartlett’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, Alice Childress’s Trouble in Mind and William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, directed by Susan Angelo.
And, of course, everyone’s favorite classic, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, adapted by Geoff Elliott, will once again showcase the company’s creativity while staying true to the story of Old Scrooge’s Christmastime redemption.

Enduring kindness
As A Noise Within prepares to showcase Come From Away, the kindness of the people of Gander, Newfoundland remains unabated.
“The generosity of spirit of the people whose story this is based on has been overwhelming,” says Julia Rodriguez-Elliott in a recent press release.
“This year marks the 25th anniversary, so they’re being pulled in every direction, plus every theater doing a production tries to contact them. Yet, when they talk to us, it’s as if they’re sharing their stories for the first time. The thing about meeting these people is the realization that the musical is truly authentic to the essence of who they are — there doesn’t seem to be a false note. It’s a beautiful story about our better angels, and now it’s become a joyous and uplifting theatrical experience.”
