‘Tis the season–to go, “BOO!”
This Halloween, I’m thinking about fear. Specifically, fear of the unknown, and lack of control.
Those, individually or in tandem, are generally behind most things we find “scary”.
Psychologists say that fans of Halloween horror stories, movies and haunts enjoy being scared because, ultimately, we know we are in control. That zombie or swamp creature or whatever isn’t REALLY going to come knocking on our door to get us.
But it’s interesting to see how fear shows up in everyday life.

I’ve experienced fear in a very silly way: when starting to learn something new, or offering a new product! There’s the reluctance to leave the familiar and venture out into new territory. And the wildest thing about that is, my best experiences in life have come from daring to do something unprecedented in the past.
(That nasty voice in your head whispers, “Maybe others will ridicule you. Maybe you really can’t get this and you’ll be disappointed. Maybe you’ll disappoint someone who’s counting on you! Maybe people will say, “she’s too old for this, who does she think she is?”)
It’s still something I wrestle with, as I live longer. But another voice says, “who cares what anyone says–when YOU say, ‘this interests me’?”
This Halloween, may you overcome any fear that leads you to try something new and fun. And I hope you have lots of your favorite kinds of candy around.
And, oh yes…
“BOO!”
