Fear and Joy at Halloween

“BOO!”

“EEEeeeek!  Hahaha!”

(We do have a good time with “fun” scares.  This time of year especially.)

What are the experiences in your life that scared you–but at which you wound up looking back and saying, “I am so glad  I did that!”?

I remember my first opportunity to do a one-on-one interview, while working for a radio station.

The day arrived.  The doorbell rang.  There, on the steps, stood my in-studio guest-to-be.

And no one ever wanted to run for the hills more than I did!

Opening the door, escorting him into the studio, chatting beforehand, all I could think was, “Why did I agree to this?”

That nasty, negative voice in my head wouldn’t quit.

“Who do you think you are, anyway?  You can’t pull this off.  You’re an introvert.  You’ll go blank.  You’ll have dead silence.  He’ll hate the experience and tell all his friends how bad it was.   You’ll shame the station…”

The clock hit top-of-hour.

On went the mic, and the red “ON AIR” light.

The guest and I began to chat.

We explored his journey as a musician.  He played his guitar, live.  We promoted his upcoming concerts.

Before we knew it, the hour was up.

The guest did, indeed, say he would tell all his friends–to listen to the recording when it was rebroadcast!

And all I could think was, “When can I do this again?”

(For the record, numerous public speakers and broadcasters describe themselves as “introverts”.   Being an introvert isn’t an obstacle–and could even be a plus, because introverts tend to research and examine a project to be sure it will work well!)

Now, what have been the “fun-scary” experiences in your life?

I’ll share with you quickly that I’ve just had another one.

This past spring, a friend challenged me to create an online course.

I’ve just released it–and it’s about storytelling.  Specifically, it’s about telling scary stories.

Because I love Halloween, due to its being a special anniversary, as covered in a previous post.

And yes, launching an online course is something new.  And as such, a scary experience.  (What if no one likes it?  What if it’s too simplistic?   What if it comes across as a seventh-grade English lecture, i.e., boring?)

But–it’s also an adventure.  One I’m glad I tried, even before I know if it succeeds or not.

Should you wish to see what it is, this is the link.

Meanwhile, Happy Halloween 2024!  And may the new experiences that “scare” you, wind up being some of the best of your life.
