{"id":1859,"date":"2013-02-23T09:46:12","date_gmt":"2013-02-23T17:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=1859"},"modified":"2013-02-23T09:46:53","modified_gmt":"2013-02-23T17:46:53","slug":"break-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=1859","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Break Time!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/trees-in-distance.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1868\" alt=\"trees in distance\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/trees-in-distance.jpg\" width=\"412\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/trees-in-distance.jpg 412w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/trees-in-distance-206x300.jpg 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>by Noella Noelophile\u2122<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Growing up in the 1960&#8217;s, I remember the <em>Weekly Reader.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This was a two-page &#8220;newspaper&#8221; for grade-schoolers, with articles about current events and scientific advances.\u00a0\u00a0 One, that appeared in about 1966, sticks in my mind.\u00a0 The general gist of this particular piece was that by the time we grew up, computers would be doing <em>everything&#8211;<\/em>and our days would be filled with leisure time.<\/p>\n<p>(Are you rolling on the floor at this point?)<\/p>\n<p>Today we&#8217;re: posting, Facebooking, tweeting, texting, e-mailing, and a variety of other social-media activities&#8211;and that&#8217;s <em>before<\/em> our workdays start!<\/p>\n<p>It seems that taking time to do something we enjoy makes us feel almost guilty!\u00a0 <em>&#8220;Lost time&#8230;if I spend the morning in the library that&#8217;s three posts I could have done..<\/em>.<em>who&#8217;s going to do this&#8230;and that&#8230;and that&#8230;.the clock is ticking, that deadline&#8217;s coming up<\/em>&#8230;and so forth, and so on.\u00a0\u00a0 And somehow, when your work is in a creative field, there&#8217;s also the sense of, &#8220;This is work I love, why <em>can&#8217;t<\/em> I do it all the time?\u00a0\u00a0 Don&#8217;t I appreciate having this opportunity?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But a good point came up at a WordCamp session we attended, last summer: no one can work 24\/7 (or as close to that as some of us do!), and remain productive.\u00a0 That&#8217;s true across the boards, no matter what your area.<\/p>\n<p>One workplace that I remember with a lot of love, understood this.\u00a0 There was a time when everyone took a fifteen-minute break in mid-afternoon, had coffee together, and could\u00a0 talk about anything that was going on&#8211;except work!\u00a0\u00a0 In a five-day workweek, then, they would have spent a total of an hour and fifteen minutes, weekly, &#8220;recharging.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Wasted&#8221; time?\u00a0 Not at all&#8211;this was one of the best creative teams with which I&#8217;ve ever had the privilege of working!<\/p>\n<p>With those thoughts in mind, how will you spend this weekend?\u00a0 I intend to spend much of today looking at cloud castles in the sky&#8230;browsing one of our favorite areas near the beach&#8230;petting our cats and holding my husband&#8217;s hand.\u00a0\u00a0 And returning refreshed to resume work tomorrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Noella Noelophile\u2122 Growing up in the 1960&#8217;s, I remember the Weekly Reader.
