focuses on the Aquarium&#8217;s care of baby animals.\u00a0\u00a0 The exhibit will contain more than a dozen exhibits featuring young animals, according to a press alert from the Aquarium.<\/p>\n<p>And many of these &#8220;babies&#8221; are on either the threatened or endangered-species list.\u00a0 So their future is closely tied to the future of our planet.<\/p>\n<p>Among them: rescued sea otter pups, color-changing cuttlefish and tiny baby sharks.\u00a0 Visitors will learn how the Aquarium cares for baby animals&#8211;including those that require 24\/7 care.\u00a0 (A human baby&#8217;s two a.m. feeding seems like a breeze, by comparison!)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hearts, minds and sustainability<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=16391\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16391\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16391\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Dr-Peter-Karieva.png\" alt=\"Aquarium of the Pacific President and CEO Dr Peter Karieva speaks from a blue lectern wiht &quot;Aquarium on the Pacific&quot; said Aquarium President and CEO Dr. Peter Karieva during Thursday morning&#8217;s live-streamed press preview.\u00a0 (Dr. Karieva began his position in August, 2020, according to the Aquarium&#8217;s website.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(Babies! is) what I would call a heart-and-mind exhibit,&#8221; Dr. Karieva continued.<br \/>\n&#8220;And I think of the Aquarium as a heart-and-mind kind of institution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;I say &#8216;heart&#8217; because you can&#8217;t think of babies without it evoking caring for (them), wanting to protect them when they&#8217;re vulnerable.\u00a0\u00a0 And also being optimistic, because there&#8217;s no future without the babies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And I say &#8216;mind&#8217; because so often&#8211;I&#8217;m a conservation biologist by training&#8211;babies really&#8230;need, and demand, our protection. if we&#8217;re going to save the species.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A look inside the nursery<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Assistant Curator of Fish and Invertebrates Janet Monday took the podium next.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=16393\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16393\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16393\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Janet-Monday-12.jpg\" alt=\"Curator of Fish and Invertebrates Janet Monday holds up an amber-colored glass jar as she stands at the Aquarium of the Pacific podium\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Janet-Monday-12.jpg 600w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Janet-Monday-12-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Previewing the animals in the &#8220;Babies!&#8221; exhibit, she held up a glass jar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Among the species you&#8217;ll see are baby bamboo sharks and epaulet sharks, and the eggs they emerge from.\u00a0\u00a0 I have an example up here if you want to check it out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Janet said the exhibit also included a dozen color-changing baby flamboyant cuttlefish, born at the Aquarium.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When these babies hatch, they&#8217;re about the size of a dime,&#8221; Janet said.<\/p>\n<p>Now, if you go to see &#8220;Babies!&#8221;, be on the lookout for Sally.\u00a0 She&#8217;s a\u00a0 juvenile desert sea tortoise.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Visitors get to learn about this endangered species, the threat it faces and how we can help,&#8221; series would be available on YouTube, next week!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Conservation: on exhibit and behind the scenes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=16412\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16412\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16412\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Erin-Lundy1-e1653618804607.jpg\" alt=\"Mammologist Eric Lundy speaks from Aquarium of the Pacific lectern\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;I would like to tell you&#8230;about some of the conservation programs you might learn about in our &#8220;Babies!&#8221; exhibit area,&#8221; said Aquarium of the Pacific Mammalogist Erin Lundy.<\/p>\n<p>The Aquarium she explained, breeds and raises baby animals to help save endangered species, in addition to caring for baby animals which will live on the premises.<\/p>\n<p>White abalone is one such species, Erin said.\u00a0 So is another which you won&#8217;t see in the &#8220;Babies!&#8221; exhibit, but which nevertheless have &#8220;a very important conservation story&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The species: mountain yellow-legged frogs, a local endangered species.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Aquarium is currently providing a home for about 250 tadpoles, keeping them safe&#8230;until they grow into frogs and can be released back into the wild,&#8221; Erin explained.\u00a0 &#8220;And (they&#8217;re non-releasable).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Aquarium of the Pacific is a partner facility in the Monterey Bay Aquarium&#8217;s Sea Otter Surrogacy program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Erin said that this program rehabilitated rescued pups, raising them with the help of surrogate mother sea otters.\u00a0\u00a0 The program benefits both, as the mothers learn to &#8220;foster&#8221; the baby sea otters.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Y ahora en espanol<a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=16414\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16414\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16414\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Cynthia3-e1653620553274.jpg\" alt=\"Senior Education Associate Cynthia Jardon speaks from the Aquarium of the Pacific lectern\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The final speaker on the live stream was Senior Education Associate Cynthia Jardon, who oversees the Aquarium&#8217;s Spanish resources.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in both English and Spanish, Cynthia told the audience that the Aquarium&#8217;s content had had some exciting upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;We can now access our app in Spanish,&#8221; she said.\u00a0 &#8220;So it is completely free on either the app store&#8230; or Google Play, and you can get this app to do a lot of really fun things.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We even have fun and cute baby photo frames on there that you can use, which is really exciting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additional contents in Spanish, she said, included some of the Aquarium&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquariumofpacific.org\/education\/aquariumacademy\">Online Academy<\/a> programs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I invite you to join me every Wednesday at 10 am for our Spanish programming&#8221; Cynthia said.<\/p>\n<p>Next Wednesday morning&#8217;s class, on June 1, is going to be &#8220;all about amphibians&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we will be focusing on some baby amphibians,&#8221; Cynthia said.\u00a0 &#8220;More specifically, our mountain yellow-legged frogs that we have been working with here.\u00a0\u00a0 We will look at their life cycle, and just some really cute baby pictures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As often happens with technology, our live stream cut out before the next speaker started.\u00a0 But it had been an interesting morning.\u00a0 And if you&#8217;re out and about in the Long Beach area, don&#8217;t miss &#8220;Babies!&#8221;
