{"id":12508,"date":"2018-11-07T18:43:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T02:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=12508"},"modified":"2018-11-07T19:28:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T03:28:00","slug":"a-christmas-movie-confection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=12508","title":{"rendered":"A Christmas-Movie Confection"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>by Noella Noelophile\u00ae<\/h6>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=12509\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12509\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12509\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Christmas-popcorn1-e1541634501867.jpg\" alt=\"white popcorn overflows a green bowl on a red tablecloth\" width=\"600\" height=\"543\" \/><\/a>One Christmas, my grandmother made the most incredible cookies.<\/p>\n<p>Snowy, glistening meringues, with sparkly red-and-green sugar on top.\u00a0 They melted in your mouth, leaving a light, sweet taste.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, those come to mind, as a perfect metaphor for the Christmas movie we saw last night: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80224055\">&#8220;Christmas With A View&#8221;<\/a>, on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know.\u00a0 I grumble all the time about &#8220;rushing the season&#8221;.\u00a0 But this one is just fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=1559\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1559\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1559\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Christmas-tree-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Christmas-tree-2.jpg 452w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Christmas-tree-2-226x300.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The plot: protagonist Clara Garrison has recently returned from a failed restaurant venture in Chicago.\u00a0 She&#8217;s superb at managing a restaurant, and dreams of having a second shot at running &#8220;her own place&#8221; in the future.\u00a0 Meanwhile, she&#8217;s managing The Summit, an upscale ski-resort restaurant, for chillingly-slick owner Hugh Peters.<\/p>\n<p>Into the mix comes newly-crowned &#8220;celebrity chef&#8221; Shane Roarke, fresh from his win on a reality-show chef competition.\u00a0 Hugh announces, to his gathered staff, that he has hired Shane as The Summit&#8217;s new chef.<\/p>\n<p>Female staff members swoon, as Shane&#8217;s recent media coverage has led to his title as &#8220;the most eligible bachelor&#8221; around.\u00a0 But no one realizes that a personal quest has brought Shane to the area&#8211;and he isn&#8217;t telling&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=1620\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1620\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1620\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/morning-latte-1.jpg\" alt=\"Latte in a white cup with a heart in the foam\" width=\"600\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/morning-latte-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/morning-latte-1-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/morning-latte-1-332x300.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Shane and Clara have instant chemistry&#8211;<em>but<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Hugh, spotlighting Clara as his star employee, involves her in a special project&#8211;<em>but<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Clara&#8217;s mom, Lydia, glows over her star turn in a popular magazine, with her latest artisanal gingerbread house.\u00a0\u00a0 Clara&#8217;s best friend, Bonnie, eavesdrops shamelessly and blurts out comments reminiscent of an eager thirteen-year-old. \u00a0 Clara&#8217;s mentors, Jackie and Frank Haven, welcome Shane to their local restaurant as he continues on his mission.\u00a0 And Christmas is coming&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=12516\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12516\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12516\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cookies-with-spatula1-e1541637895919.jpg\" alt=\"tollhouse cookies on foil-covered sheet with spatula\" width=\"452\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Is &#8220;Christmas With a View&#8221; destined to be a Christmas classic?\u00a0 Probably not, but it&#8217;s a good time.\u00a0\u00a0 Its scenario is as predictable as a chocolate-chip cookie recipe, but the characterizations and humor involved make &#8220;getting there&#8221; fun.<\/p>\n<p>Vivica A. Fox&#8217;s Lydia is warm, savvy and ambitious.\u00a0 (I especially liked seeing an &#8220;older&#8221; character with some goals and aspirations, as all too few are represented!)\u00a0\u00a0 Kristen Kurnik gives depth to Bonnie, who is lovable and loyal, with her &#8220;goofy&#8221; side just one facet of her personality.\u00a0 (She also has one of the best lines of the movie, when she exclaims, &#8220;Everybody&#8217;s happy&#8211;that sucks!&#8221; to a morose Clara.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jess Walton and Patrick Duffy are believable and touching as the long-married couple, Jackie and Frank, who still have the &#8220;spark&#8221; between them.<\/p>\n<p>And the two giddy groupies, both named &#8220;Janice&#8221;,\u00a0 are hilarious!\u00a0\u00a0 The breakfast scene, where they corner Shane and he tries politely to extricate himself, is great.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, &#8220;Christmas With a View&#8221; includes a couple of scenes that stretch credibility.\u00a0 (For example, would <em>your<\/em> mom smile and wish you a &#8220;good time&#8221; if you left her on Christmas Eve to go have a drink with your friend at a local bar?)\u00a0 But suspending disbelief, it&#8217;s a ride to be enjoyed&#8211;including the funny &#8220;reality-show&#8221; moment with a volatile fellow-chef competitor, and a wonderful &#8220;secret mission&#8221; sequence which I won&#8217;t ruin by going into detail.<a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=6440\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6440\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6440\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/wreath-alone.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas wreath on white wall\" width=\"690\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Suffice it to say, make some hot chocolate, perhaps grab some tissues (what Christmas movie <em>doesn&#8217;t<\/em> have a lump-in-the-throat scene?) and consider seeing &#8220;Christmas With a View&#8221; with someone you love.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Noella Noelophile\u00ae One Christmas, my grandmother made the most incredible cookies.
