In our house, we’d had a very mature discussion.<\/p>\n

The time had come to welcome a new feline family member (or two).\u00a0\u00a0 We were headed for the local shelter.<\/p>\n

Mature cats, we had agreed, were our candidates.\u00a0 They were less likely to be adopted, and a lot less rambunctious for their future lives as indoor kitties.\"how<\/a>We were sticking to our plan beautifully.<\/p>\n

In the cat room of Long Beach’s Pitchford Companion Animal Village<\/a>, we’d lost our hearts to a gorgeous, three-and-a-half-year-old silver tabby mix.\u00a0 One cat adopted, one more to go.<\/p>\n

And then…<\/em><\/p>\n

We walked past a cage just near the door.\u00a0 A small, five-month-old black kitten with downy, baby fur thrust a paw through the bars at my husband.\u00a0 “Mieuw<\/em>…”\"Snuggles<\/a>(You probably know what comes next.\u00a0 She had us at “Mieuw”!)<\/p>\n

Ever notice how, the moment you’re comfortably “felined’, other adoptable candidates (“catdidates?”) seem to come purring out of the woodwork?\"Snow<\/a>Our two four-legged family members have now been part of the household for years, and we know<\/em> who’s in charge around here.\u00a0 Anyone who doesn’t, can just ask our silver-tabby dominant kitty, “Snow”–after they finish scratching her chin.<\/p>\n

And now, pet shops seem to have adoptions every week, with cats practically pointing to themselves as you walk by. “ME-ow!\u00a0 Me! Now!”\u00a0 There is a glorious Maine coon cat in a window not far from the grocery–and she has a way of following passersby with her eyes.\u00a0 “I am auditioning a new family, wouldn’t you like to submit your application?”<\/em><\/p>\n

Last Christmas season, we enjoyed “Operation Santa Paws”, where Justin Rudd<\/a> and company visited local animal shelters.\"purring<\/a>We could hear this kitty purring through the bars of her cage at the Seal Beach Animal Care Center.<\/a>\u00a0 If we didn’t already have two perfectly good “miniature lions”, we would certainly have brought her home!\u00a0\u00a0 (However, ours already don’t seem to comprehend that a bed has sufficient space for two cats!)<\/p>\n

But–if you love kitties and can make a fifteen- to twenty-year commitment (if you’re lucky, that’s how long they can live!), you might like to “audition” at your local shelter.\u00a0 Sadly, Pitchford, in Long Beach, is not a no-kill.\u00a0 If you start there, you may be saving a life.\"black<\/a>Closer to Seal Beach?\u00a0 Seal Beach Animal Care Center <\/a>is a no-kill shelter, and they’d welcome your support.\u00a0 (They need volunteers, if you aren’t in a position to adopt.)<\/p>\n

And earlier this year, Los Angeles became the largest city to ban retail sales of non-rescue pets.\u00a0 Does your city have that ban?\u00a0 Here is the link to a great nonprofit–Best Friends<\/a>,\u00a0 the leader of the no-kill movement.\u00a0 They publish a list of cities and states with retail pet sale bans.\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n
