Satan exclaims, in response to Liam&#8217;s observation about his &#8220;chunkiness&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What, you don&#8217;t put on a few extra pounds over the holidays?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, it&#8217;s down to business.\u00a0 Satan offers Liam the standard three wishes&#8211;in exchange for his soul.\u00a0\u00a0 But the diabolical representative has a tough sales job ahead of him: Liam politely declines.<\/p>\n<p>Hilarity ensues, as Satan schools Liam in the benefits of going for what he wants.\u00a0 In the process, the question gets explored: when does &#8220;assertive&#8221; with a mischievous grin, playfully creating mayhem as he accompanies Liam through his day.\u00a0\u00a0 In one mildly-bawdy scene, he and Liam encounter Mr. Charles (P.J. Christmas. Ever!&#8221;<\/a>, takes that phenomenon and has a great time with it.<\/p>\n<p>After a year&#8217;s hiatus, Jackie Jennings (Brandy Norwood) is sending out her annual missive to her &#8220;fellow earth-dwellers&#8221;.\u00a0 Her ten-year-old daughter has just been accepted to Harvard, her son is providing water to underprivileged African communities, she just sold her company for a sum that landed her on the front page of a business publication, her husband is master of a karate dojo, and in charge of the town&#8217;s Christmas pageant&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and her college friend, Charlotte Sanders (Heather Graham) has had enough.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18236\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=18236\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18236\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18236\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18236\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/BCE_Unit_06402R2-scaled-e1701042859456.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Best. (Photo \u00a9 2023., Scott Everett White\/Netflix and used with permission.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jackie welcomes the family with open arms, insisting they stay for Christmas.\u00a0\u00a0 Immediately, Charlotte embarks on a quest to prove Jackie&#8217;s Christmas letters works of fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Much to her consternation, she keeps discovering the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, a spark still seems to exist between Jackie and Rob, who has admitted that she was his &#8220;first college girlfriend&#8221; and that they used to sing together in a band.\u00a0\u00a0 Much snooping ensues, from Charlotte&#8211;and she <em>thinks <\/em>she&#8217;s caught her husband up to something&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Perfection to the extreme<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_18233\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=18233\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18233\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18233\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18233\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/new-year-3974099_12802-e1701039670234.jpg\" alt=\"Green pine tree laden down with red ornaments and red holly berries\" width=\"466\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/Image by Anastasia Lavrinovich from Pixabay\">Anastasia Lavrinovich<\/a> from Pixaba.)<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My favorite aspect of &#8220;Best.Christmas.Ever!&#8221; is the fun it has with the idea of &#8220;over-the-top perfect&#8221; at Christmastime.<\/p>\n<p>Jackie&#8217;s house isn&#8217;t just huge and palatial.\u00a0 It&#8217;s decorated to the point that a Manhattan department store&#8217;s Christmas displays would seems dowdy, by comparison!<\/p>\n<p>(In an email interview provided by Netflix, director Mary Lambert comments that production designer Diane Millet &#8220;had her hands full on this movie. &#8230;All the locations had to be STUFFED with Christmas decorations.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Then, there&#8217;s Jackie&#8217;s hunky husband Valentino (Matt Cedeno), who greets their guests at breakfast with Latin charm and fresh-squeezed orange juice.\u00a0\u00a0 And ten-year-old, matter-of-fact genius Beatrix (Madison Skye Validum), who mentions to Charlotte that she&#8217;s read, and found some errors in, the latter&#8217;s dissertation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18181\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=18181\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18181\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18181\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18181\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/BCE_Unit_00464R-scaled-e1701038766875.jpg\" alt=\"Jackie serves custom pancakes as a perturbed Charlotte looks on\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Best. (Photo \u00a9 2023, Scott Everett White\/Netflix and used with permission.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And, of course, Jackie whips up custom pancakes for their guests&#8211;each shaped and decorated to match what she knows about the recipient.\u00a0\u00a0 Rob gets a crown-shaped pancake.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My king of rock and roll!&#8221; comments Jackie warmly.<\/p>\n<p>Brandy Norwood&#8217;s Jackie is joyful, upbeat and capable of weathering any circumstances while still looking photo-shoot ready.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18182\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=18182\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18182\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18182\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18182\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/BCE_Unit_12401R-scaled-e1701038690350.jpg\" alt=\"Jackie sings from the stage of the Christmas pageant.\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Best. (Photo \u00a9 2023., Scott Everett White\/Netflix, and used with permission.).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Several scenes later, when the Christmas pageant rehearsal threatens to disintegrate into chaos, she takes the stage for a very intimate-sounding (and Grammy-worthy) duet of &#8220;Let It Snow&#8221; with Rob&#8211;to a beaming Valentino&#8217;s pride and Charlotte&#8217;s consternation.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of my personal favorite scenes of &#8220;Best. Christmas. Ever!&#8221;, showcasing Brandy&#8217;s breathtaking voice while staying true to the &#8220;superwoman&#8221; storyline.<\/p>\n<p>Another fun aspect?\u00a0 Grant and new friend Beatrix debate the authenticity of Santa Claus.\u00a0\u00a0 They begin a &#8220;research study&#8221;&#8211;and with her rational thought processes and his gift for creating havoc, the results are predictably hilarious.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18231\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=18231\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18231\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18231\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18231\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/BCE_Unit_12859R-scaled-e1701039185119.jpg\" alt=\"Jackie, Charlotte, Rob, Valentino, Beatrix, Grant and Dora stand together in front of a sign that says &quot;Christmas Pageant&quot;\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Best. Scott Everett White\/Netflix, and used with permission.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What isn&#8217;t predictable here, is a twist, at the end, that gets hinted at early on. \u00a0 While we know we&#8217;ll discover something isn&#8217;t perfect in Jackie&#8217;s world, there&#8217;s also an element you may not see coming.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s about a Christmas star, and fits in with the movie&#8217;s central themes of friendship and belief&#8211;and that&#8217;s all I&#8217;m going to say.<\/p>\n<p>Like most Christmas movies, &#8220;Best.Christmas.Ever!&#8221; does have a number of suspend-disbelief moments.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18230\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=18230\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18230\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18230\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18230\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/BCE_Unit_08040R2-scaled-e1701039161584.jpg\" alt=\"Jackie and Charlotte face each other against a snowy background.\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Best. Scott Everett White\/Netflix, and used with permission.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The only ones that really struck me: Jackie&#8217;s relentless hospitality and good cheer, in the face of Charlotte&#8217;s less-than-gracious actions.\u00a0\u00a0 Were a guest to poke into every corner and cranny, once we&#8217;ve opened our home to them, most of us would cheerfully show them the door!<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the &#8220;research&#8221; Beatrix and Grant conduct.\u00a0\u00a0 If genius Beatrix can accurately predict a business&#8217;s future collapse from her observations, would she <em>really<\/em> be fooled by&#8230;but no, I won&#8217;t ruin it.\u00a0\u00a0 And after all, she <em>is<\/em> ten, and <em>wants<\/em> to believe, which can cause anyone, ten or older, to ask fewer questions and just enjoy the moment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18229\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=18229\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18229\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18229\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18229\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/BCE_Unit_14640R4-scaled-e1701039143862.jpg\" alt=\"Awestruck children look up towards the sky\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Best. 2022 version of <em>Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Much less love it.<\/p>\n<p>But by the time this reimagined animated version, scripted by the late Oscar-winning composer, playwright and lyricist Leslie Bricusse, introduced Old Fezziwig, I was as won over as the original &#8220;Bah, humbug&#8221; classic story.<\/p>\n<p>The new &#8220;music&#8221;?\u00a0 Animation effects.<\/p>\n<p>While incorporating 3D animation effects which were not possible, even twenty years ago, <em>Scrooge: A Christmas Carol <\/em>never gets lost in its own special effects.\u00a0 The production team appears to have had a lot of fun, re-imagining the story with new characterizations.\u00a0 Especially fun is the ghost of Past, a shapeshifting candle, as well as the herd of sprites that accompany Present.\u00a0 Plus, there&#8217;s the graveyard scene&#8211;with a gooseflesh-raising climax that fits right into the action while using 2022 technology.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17139\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=17139\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17139\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17139\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17139\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/christmas-3983887_1280-e1670344784695.jpg\" alt=\"Book open with eggnog nearby, Christmas gingerbread stars set on its pages and surrounded by pinecones holly and a candy cane.\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/christmas-3983887_1280-e1670344784695.jpg 700w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/christmas-3983887_1280-e1670344784695-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by Ylanite Koppens from Pixabay.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And one of the movie&#8217;s best funny lines occurs when Scrooge balks at accompanying the second ghost on a look at Christmas present.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we did a whole song and everything!&#8221; the ghost protests.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of which&#8211;the songs.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll recognize several of them from the 1970 <em>Scrooge <\/em>film, starring Albert Finney.\u00a0 And with good reason&#8211;most of those were also written by Leslie Bricusse, whose other compositions include &#8220;Pure Imagination&#8221; from <em>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Incorporated into this new animated retelling, these songs not only have held up over the past fifty years (wow, doesn&#8217;t seem possible!)&#8211;they shine.\u00a0\u00a0 There are also some new ones, which are highly enjoyable and fit perfectly with the spirit (spirits?) of the film.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the cast, including the guests at Scrooge&#8217;s nephew&#8217;s party, is now multicultural&#8211;a gentle reminder that our society is richer due to being composed of people from all over the world.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17138\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=17138\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17138\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17138\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17138\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/cake-1914463_1280-e1670344551261.jpg\" alt=\"Chocolate Christmas cake with confectioners' sugar topping cut in eight slices, sits on a table near pine branches cinnamon sticks and a red-and-green plaid ribbon.\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/cake-1914463_1280-e1670344551261.jpg 700w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/cake-1914463_1280-e1670344551261-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by \u0414\u0430\u0440\u044c\u044f \u042f\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430 from Pixabay.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And there&#8217;s also a great addition to the story, about which I&#8217;d always wondered when seeing the 1970 <em>Scrooge.\u00a0<\/em> I won&#8217;t ruin it here!\u00a0 Suffice it to say that character&#8217;s reactions&#8211;including Scrooge&#8217;s&#8211;are completely believable during the climax scene in the graveyard.<\/p>\n<p>Now, what elements of <em>Scrooge: A Christmas Carol <\/em>took some getting used to, for me?<\/p>\n<p>Well, for one thing, the Scrooge character is handsome and distinguished&#8211;though every bit as mean as Dickens&#8217; original.\u00a0\u00a0 Which is a real departure from most portrayals.<\/p>\n<p>So is the fact that in this particular film, Scrooge has a pet.\u00a0\u00a0 A dog, Prudence, left to him by his late partner, Marley&#8211;and he&#8217;s actually kind to her.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14767\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14767\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14767\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14767\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14767\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/advent-candles-5798830_1920-e1608663431480.jpg\" alt=\"Four fat red Advent candles on a gold cloth glow against a dark background next to a glass star ornament\" width=\"600\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14767\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by Myriams-Fotos from Pixabay.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Perhaps what I missed the most, though, is the moment between Scrooge and his nephew when the miser declines yet another Christmas invitation.\u00a0 In the original, Scrooge demands to know why his nephew got married&#8211;and is flummoxed by the simple answer, &#8220;I fell in love.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Having that moment in this version of Scrooge would have been fun.<\/p>\n<p>But, all of those are minor quibbles that don&#8217;t even rate a &#8220;3&#8221; on the &#8220;Bah, humbug&#8221; scale.\u00a0 <em>Scrooge: A Christmas Carol<\/em> is a clever and fun update which may just interest the next generation in reading Dickens&#8217; original.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a heartwarming dedication at the end to Leslie Bricusse, who passed away unexpectedly in 2021. \u00a0\u00a0 <em>Scrooge: A Christmas Carol, <\/em>along with his earlier musical works that have brought joy to innumerable movie viewers, is the final chapter in his legacy.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=17172\" title=\"Continue reading &rarr;\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/a><\/div><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=15864\">&#8220;Love Hard&#8221; for Christmas!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And not the swimming kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the premise of Netflix&#8217;s new Christmas movie, &#8220;Love Hard&#8221;,  a good-time romantic comedy with some take-your-breath-away-gorgeous Christmas settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As in many comedies, plausibility doesn&#8217;t figure largely in the story line. Natalie gathers a major following in the digital publication for which she works, as she regularly updates readers on her latest romantic disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <em>then<\/em>&#8230;as she scrolls through a dating app for the nth time&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;A man who could put any Greek god to shame, stares back at her.  And she&#8217;s smitten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a flurry of texts back and forth to &#8220;Josh Lin&#8221;, who lives in New York, Natalie is determined to pursue her own &#8220;happy ending&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly, she boards a plane for the East Coast, set to surprise Josh for Christmas.  But Natalie gets the surprise&#8211;she&#8217;s been catfished!  Josh Lin turns out to be a shorter,  endearingly-nerdy guy, living with his parents.  Josh (Jimmy O. He&#8217;ll even serve as matchmaker!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Natalie accepts, embarking on the mission of becoming Tag&#8217;s &#8220;ideal woman&#8221;.  Under Josh&#8217;s tutelage, she sets out to learn Tag&#8217;s interests, and to make all of them hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all its lightheartedness,  &#8220;Love Hard&#8221; hits some real-life moments of honesty, dead center.  Family dynamics, particularly as they relate to the youngest child, are on display at the Lin family Christmas gathering.   There&#8217;s the loving and indulgent Grandma June (Althea Kaye), and the &#8220;can-do-no-wrong&#8221; older brother, Owen (Harry Shum, Jr.), as well as the parents who seem thrilled to see their younger son show up with an alleged romantic interest.   Anyone who&#8217;s been the youngest child will relate to the way the family perceives Josh&#8211;as a work in progress! Suffice it to say that Natalie is completely nonathletic, while Tag (played with &#8220;I-know-I&#8217;m-an-alpha-male-but-I&#8217;m-still-nice&#8221; coolness by Darren Barnett) could be the Original Outdoorsman.    Her attitude of, &#8220;Oh, I got this&#8221; is hilarious but recognizable.  (Who <em>hasn&#8217;t<\/em> confused becoming your best self, with trying desperately to be something you&#8217;re not&#8211;with or without a rude awakening?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I found myself wanting to wave a hand in front of Natalie&#8217;s face!  Josh is cute and funny, while Tag is simply, as commented on in the movie, &#8220;smoking hot&#8221;.   Of course we know where this is headed, as Josh and Natalie&#8217;s friendship grows to the point that she helps him re-take his profile pictures. He follows her instructions all too well!  I won&#8217;t ruin it by saying more, except that Grandma June&#8217;s warm and believable reaction hits just the right notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also the breathtaking sets that made me want to decorate our house just like the Lins&#8217;.  The Christmas lights shining through the snow (OK, as a Southern California transplant I can pass on the &#8220;snow<em>&#8220;<\/em> part!) and the festive decorations add to the overall Christmas-gift feeling of &#8220;Love Hard&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a technically, continues until Twelfth Night&#8211;January 6th.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, here is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\/\">Netflix<\/a> movie we found a lot of fun, for this Christmas season: <em>Christmas Inheritance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While this isn&#8217;t a new film (according to Netflix&#8217;s webpage, it was released in 2017) it was new to me, this year.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s a good time, with fun performances by a cast who clearly enjoyed crafting their interpretations of a familiar theme.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14823\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14823\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14823\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14823\" apartment, a handsome fiance, Gray (Michael Xavier)\u00a0 and hopes of helming Home and Hearth, the gift business her father and his partner have built from the ground up, upon her dad&#8217;s retirement.\u00a0 She also has a sense of fun and considerable intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>What she lacks, though, are leadership skills.\u00a0 Ellen has never had to take initiative or work to earn anything&#8211;and it shows.<\/p>\n<p>After her antics during a Christmas fundraiser&#8211;a great scene which establishes her likability and sporting nature&#8211;her father, Jim (Neil Crone) seriously questions her ability to take over at Home and Hearth.\u00a0\u00a0 To his mind, his pampered and irresponsible daughter just isn&#8217;t CEO material.<\/p>\n<p>However, he does give her a chance to redeem herself.\u00a0\u00a0 Yearly, Jim sends a Christmas letter to his partner Zeke.<\/p>\n<p>This year, he tells Ellen, if she will hand-deliver the letter, he just <em>might<\/em> reconsider.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen is onboard and she sets off to catch her&#8211;wait, her <em>what?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14821\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14821\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14821\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14821\" York towns.<\/p>\n<p>And the catch: Jim confiscates Ellen&#8217;s credit cards and sends her off with just $20 in her pocket.\u00a0 She will have to manage on her own initiative, for the first time in her life.\u00a0 Plus, she&#8217;s to travel incognito.<\/p>\n<p>Her adventures, from there, are what make the journey fun.\u00a0 Starting with her search for the bus&#8217;s &#8220;stewardess&#8221;, after boarding.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14827\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14827\" rel=\"attachment href=\"http:\/\/pixabay.com\/\">Pixabay<\/a>.)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Predictably, when Ellen arrives in Snow Falls, the bus station is sneeze-and-you&#8217;ll-miss-it small.\u00a0 The weather is less than welcoming (appropriately, the snow is falling).\u00a0 And the town has one cab, driven by local Jake Collins (Jake Lacy), a man-of-all-trades who also manages Snow Falls Guest House Inn&#8211;which is Ellen&#8217;s destination.<\/p>\n<p>As in the tradition of romances, Ellen cannot stand Jake on sight.\u00a0 She just wants to deliver that letter and get the heck out of Snow Falls.\u00a0 But Zeke isn&#8217;t around, Jake has no idea where he&#8217;s gone or when he&#8217;ll be back, and Ellen must adapt to her new surroundings.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14826\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14826\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14826\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" exploration.\u00a0 Gradually, she and Jake find common ground.\u00a0 And Ellen&#8217;s natural skills and creativity begin to come to the fore, as she begins to grow in her unfamiliar environment, just before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>A favorite performance, from this particular movie, comes from Andie MacDowell, who shines as warmhearted and knowledgeable Debbie Collins, proprietor of Debbie&#8217;s Diner.\u00a0 The scene where Ellen tries to fake her way through Christmas baking is great.\u00a0 However, my all-time favorite sequence comes shortly thereafter&#8211;as Ellen comes into her own, using her people skills and powers of persuasion to benefit the local Christmas fundraiser.\u00a0 The music for this particular sequence is classic&#8211;and no, I won&#8217;t ruin it by saying anything more!<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14824\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14824\" rel=\"attachment arranged marriage, <em>and\u00a0<\/em>taking over the family business?<\/p>\n<p>Now, just to complicate things&#8211;what if your dad is Santa Claus?\u00a0 That &#8220;family business&#8221; is his whole North Pole enterprise&#8211;and your &#8220;intended&#8221; is Jack Frost&#8217;s son?\u00a0 Worse, what if you&#8217;ve never even <em>met<\/em> that son&#8211;because you&#8217;ve been &#8220;promised&#8221;, since childhood, in what amounts to a business merger?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the premise of &#8220;Santa Girl&#8221;, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\/\">Netflix<\/a>.\u00a0 And the cast and crew manage to have a lot of fun pulling it off, while treating viewers to a great Christmas romp.<\/p>\n<p><div Pixabay.)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>At the start of the movie, Cassie Claus (Jennifer Stone) is far less than enchanted with the path set out for her. \u00a0 She wants to experience the &#8220;real world&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>When she secretly applies to college and is accepted, she must convince her father, now a dour and jaded Santa (Barry Bostwick), that she needs this one small concession before she accedes to his wishes.<\/p>\n<p>Dad agrees, under two conditions.<\/p>\n<p>First, Cassie must fulfill her part of the bargain after one semester.\u00a0 And second (to her chagrin), she must be chaperoned by her endearingly-annoying personal elf, Pep (McKayla Witt).<\/p>\n<p>Cassie isn&#8217;t thrilled with the second condition, but accepts it.\u00a0 And off she goes, to her new on-campus adventure.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, complications arise.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14707\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a Richter<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/pixabay.com\/\">Pixabay<\/a>.)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>She doesn&#8217;t fit in with her fellow students.\u00a0\u00a0 Her calculus class proves daunting.\u00a0 An attractive young undergraduate, JR (Joshua Cody) strikes up a friendship with her, despite Pep&#8217;s warnings&#8211;and is not what he seems.<\/p>\n<p>And Cassie feels more than a shiver of attraction to fellow student\u00a0 Sam (Devon Werkheiser) when he sets up regular calculus tutoring sessions.\u00a0 Although the feeling is mutual, Cassie is mindful of her engagement&#8211;and her promise to her father.<\/p>\n<p>But her fiancee&#8217;s father&#8211;Jack Frost himself (Hank Stone) isn&#8217;t so sure.\u00a0 Wanting to cement the merger between his family and Santa&#8217;s enterprise, he shows up on-campus and takes steps to protect his investment.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, December is coming ever closer.<\/p>\n<p>What makes <em>Santa Girl <\/em>fun is the humor and imagination with which the story is told.\u00a0 (Who would ever have envisioned an elf as a dedicated career woman?)\u00a0\u00a0 Cassie exhibits an almost-impossible predilection for sweets (an early scene where Pep brings her her breakfast, is classic!), which is believable, given her genetics.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14698\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14698\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14698\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14698\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14698\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/santa-claus-1906513_1920-e1608064443414.jpg\" alt=\"Santa's arm with a white glove, taking a cookie from a plate under a trimmed Christmas tree with a candy-cane-striped mug in the background\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by <a href=\"http:\/\/pixabay.com\/users\/jillwellington-334088\/?utm_source=link-attribution&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=image&amp;utm_content=1906513\">Jill Wellington<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/pixabay.com\/\">Pixabay<\/a>.)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Barry Bostwick, as a widowed Santa, gives the less-than-jolly old saint a human perspective: wanting, and believing he knows, what is best for his only daughter.\u00a0 And he proudly boasts, at one point, of the &#8220;reindeer power&#8221; in his top-of-the-line, Christmas-red sports car.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the movie is a visual treat.\u00a0 The holiday-ball scene gleams like the sparkliest gold ornament.\u00a0 Jack Frost&#8217;s chilling makeup, with his dead-blue eyes, fits the character perfectly.\u00a0 And then there&#8217;s Santa&#8217;s fantasy castle, which I personally found reminiscent of Neuschwanstein and which provides a great metaphor for the established and impenetrable traditions which Cassie&#8217;s future is meant to uphold.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll do no spoilers, but expect a twist in what otherwise might have been a predictable movie climax.<\/p>\n<p>And a side note, which was a lot of fun: the beautiful college campus, in which the action is set, is more than a setting.\u00a0 It&#8217;s Shenandoah University, which, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.su.edu\/santagirl\/about-santa-girl\/\">according to the university&#8217;s website<\/a>, co-produced <em>Santa Girl <\/em>and involved 62 students in the project, in a first-of-its kind collaboration!<\/p>\n<h4><em><strong>&#8220;Santa Girl&#8221;, co-produced by Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, is available now on Netflix.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=14685\" title=\"Continue reading &rarr;\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/a><\/div><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=14648\">A New Christmas Classic<\/a>  December 9, 2020<div class=\"lcp_content\"><h6>by Noella Noelophile\u00ae<\/h6>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14662\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14662\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14662\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14662\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14662\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/warm-and-cozy-1975215_1920-e1607535172607.jpg\" alt=\"Popcorn in a red bowl and a mug of hot chocolate near a blazing fireplace\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by Jill Wellington from Pixabay.)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Some of the best handcrafted gifts are made with loving attention to detail.\u00a0 They also carry a sense that creating them was fun.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s exactly what<a href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\/\"> Netflix&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0 <em>Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey<\/em> is&#8211;a handcrafted gift of a Christmas musical.<\/p>\n<p>It opens with a young girl&#8217;s sense of wonder and magic.<\/p>\n<p>That theme carries through with nontraditional characters, warmhearted spectacle and top-notch performances with a lot of inspiration.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14663\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14663\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14663\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14663\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14663\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/new-years-eve-1909061_1280-e1607535755513.jpg\" alt=\"Red metal lantern with white lighted tea light candle in snow next to two fabric star ornaments\" width=\"600\" height=\"464\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by Anastasia538 from Pixabay.)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>The plotline is a familiar one: love and redemption at Christmastime.\u00a0 But the all-Black principal cast takes the audience on a new journey, through the world of Jeronicus Jangle, inventor extraordinaire.<\/p>\n<p>When we first meet him, Jeronicus is at the top of his game.\u00a0 He designs incredible new toys, every Christmas, that evoke a sense of wonder.\u00a0 His customers can&#8217;t wait to see what he&#8217;ll invent next.\u00a0 And between loving his work and loving his wife and daughter, who support his efforts, his life is a happy one.<\/p>\n<p>But ambition and envy emerge, in the form of Gustafson, an apprentice who wants to<em> be<\/em> Jeronicus but can&#8217;t quite manage to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Keegan-Michael Key, as Gustafson, gives his character dimension normally lacking in traditional Christmas-movie villains.\u00a0\u00a0 Gustafson&#8217;s ambition and pride lead him astray in a more true-to-life fashion than a stereotypical &#8220;bad guy'&#8221; perspective.\u00a0\u00a0 He isn&#8217;t just &#8220;bad&#8221; because the script says so&#8211;we see him wrestle with his aspirations versus his better nature.\u00a0 But ultimately, he makes the wrong choice.<\/p>\n<p>And the results shatter Jeronicus&#8217; life.\u00a0 Now, no one can reach through his self-isolation and depression&#8211;or can they?<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14664\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14664\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14664\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14664\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14664\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/bank-2547356_1920-e1607535955653.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Christmas lights illuminate a snowy street\" width=\"600\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by bluartpapeleria from Pixabay.)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Set in a largely fantasy-Victorian setting, <em>Jingle Jangle <\/em>is a visual treat.\u00a0\u00a0 Unexpected touches show up everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>The storybook which the grandmother opens, operates with magical gears and contraptions. \u00a0 Jeronicus&#8217; lab and emporium is whirring with spectacular creations.\u00a0 At several points in the story, equations and formula appear in lights, communicating the excitement of research and new ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Even the sparkly red gown which Phylicia Rashad&#8217;s warm and nonconventional grandmother character wears, is out of the ordinary.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (At first, this costume choice seems surprising.\u00a0\u00a0 A sequinned outfit to read her grandchildren a Christmas story?\u00a0 But by the end of the movie, the costume seems perfect for her character.\u00a0\u00a0 I won&#8217;t do a &#8220;spoiler&#8221; by explaining why!)<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14665\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=14665\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14665\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14665\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14665\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/emotions-4637323_19202-e1607536333109.jpg\" alt=\"Four red candles lighted on a brass plate of stars and pinecones with sparkly stars around them\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Royalty-free image by Gerhard G. from Pixabay.)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>I particularly loved the strong female characters .\u00a0\u00a0 Jeronicus&#8217; young granddaughter, Journey (newcomer Madalen Mills), displays engineering talents and critical-thinking skills that may very well inspire young girls to think, &#8220;wow, I can do that too!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Phylicia Rashad&#8217;s grandmother is the forward-thinking, encouraging grandparent who could launch any child towards achieving their dreams.\u00a0\u00a0 And Lisa Davina Phillips&#8217; Ms. Johnston knows what she wants, and isn&#8217;t shy about saying so.<\/p>\n<p>The music?\u00a0 A variety of moods and styles, well-fitted to each character.\u00a0 Young Jeronicus (Justin Cornwell) sings an uptempo R&amp;B number as he showcases his new creation.\u00a0 Ms. Johnston belts out a bluesy number as she makes an unsuccessful play for Jeronicus&#8217; affection, and Anika Noni Rose, as Jeronicus&#8217; estranged daughter Jessica, sings a hopeful and poignant ballad that may well leave a lump in your throat.<\/p>\n<p>Favorite moments, for me, included the scene where a despondent older Jeronicus (Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker) does his best to protect his now-pawnshop from Ms. Johnston and her singing, dancing trio; Ricky Martin&#8217;s superegotistical\u00a0 &#8220;Don Juan&#8221; doll&#8217;s preening musical number; and, of course, the robot, &#8220;Buddy 3000&#8221; and his actions at the film&#8217;s climas.<\/p>\n<p>Five (Christmas) stars and a candy cane to this one!<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>&#8220;Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey&#8221; is a new original movie by David E. of the film is a glorious, real-life New England historic inn.\u00a0 I want to see it &#8220;in person&#8221; next Christmas&#8211;or maybe in a less snowy season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=6440\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6440\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6440\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/wreath-alone.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas wreath on white wall\" width=\"690\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The plot?\u00a0 In the days of Prohibition, handsome young Daniel Forsythe is heading back to his New England home, and his fiancee, for a Christmas Eve party.\u00a0 Just outside the Hollygrove Inn, which he co-owns, he meets a sudden, untimely death at the hands of an unseen assailant.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to the present day.\u00a0\u00a0 Kate Jordan, a rising star at her legal firm, expects a promotion.\u00a0 Her supervisor assures her the promotion is hers&#8211;<em>if<\/em> she can broker the sale of the Hollygrove Inn, in a timely manner.\u00a0 There are just two problems.\u00a0 One: a &#8220;timely manner&#8221; would mean getting it appraised and sold within the next three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The second problem?\u00a0 Well&#8211;Kate&#8217;s just about to meet him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#8217;s ghost haunts the Hollygrove, scaring away both prospective buyers and the appraiser who was to have worked with Kate on the sale.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=10137\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10137\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10137\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/candle-21.jpg\" alt=\"Red candle in cut-glass holder burns on as it sits on red tablecloth\" width=\"504\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/candle-21.jpg 504w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/candle-21-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the best tradition of romances, Daniel and Kate initially despise each other.\u00a0\u00a0 He accuses her of &#8220;trespassing&#8221;, while she, in her turn, reminds him that his day is long past.<\/p>\n<p>But they eventually begin a dialogue, and Daniel tells Kate that he is &#8220;cursed&#8221; to return to the inn every Christmas.\u00a0 For twelve days every year, he becomes a solid-flesh human being.\u00a0 However, he has no idea why the curse exists.\u00a0 Why twelve days?\u00a0 Why Christmas?\u00a0 And who is responsible for his untimely end?<\/p>\n<p>So Daniel and Kate broker a deal.\u00a0 If she can solve the mystery of his murder, he will leave.\u00a0 The curse will be broken, the Hollygrove Inn will, in all probability, sell, and Kate will start the New Year in the position she&#8217;s been craving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=1419\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1419\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1419\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/hollyberries1-e1546037885678.jpg\" alt=\"Closeup of holly berries in Victorian Christmas flower arrangement surrounded by red poinsettias, a pink rose and a white rose\" width=\"480\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Christmas is working its magic&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Besides the fun of the supernatural mystery and the &#8220;how&#8221; of getting to where we&#8217;re going in the story, a definite high point is the beauty of the snow-covered, Christmasy landscape and the vintage decorations inside the inn.<\/p>\n<p>The inn in question?\u00a0 A Google search reveals it to be the real-life Victorian landmark <a href=\"http:\/\/proctormansioninn.com\/\">Proctor Mansion Inn<\/a>, in Wrentham, Massachusetts.\u00a0 And, yes, here is the <a href=\"http:\/\/proctormansioninn.com\/the-movies\/\">link to more information<\/a> about the filming of <em>The Spirit of Christmas<\/em>, complete with photos.\u00a0 And while they don&#8217;t promise you a ghost&#8211;at Christmas or any other time&#8211;they do accept <a href=\"http:\/\/proctormansioninn.com\/lodging\/\">lodging reservations<\/a> and host weddings and special events.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, for this evening or weekend, you may just want to brew some hot chocolate, grab the popcorn and check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80094523\"><em>The Spirit of Christmas<\/em> on Netflix<\/a>.\u00a0 After all, there&#8217;s always room for more Christmas spirit&#8211;or spirits, as the case may be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=13041\" title=\"Continue reading &rarr;\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/a><\/div><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=12508\">A Christmas-Movie Confection<\/a>  November 7, 2018<div class=\"lcp_content\"><h6>by Noella Noelophile\u00ae<\/h6>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=12509\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12509\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12509\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Christmas-popcorn1-e1541634501867.jpg\" alt=\"white popcorn overflows a green bowl on a red tablecloth\" width=\"600\" height=\"543\" \/><\/a>One Christmas, my grandmother made the most incredible cookies.<\/p>\n<p>Snowy, glistening meringues, with sparkly red-and-green sugar on top.\u00a0 They melted in your mouth, leaving a light, sweet taste.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, those come to mind, as a perfect metaphor for the Christmas movie we saw last night: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80224055\">&#8220;Christmas With A View&#8221;<\/a>, on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know.\u00a0 I grumble all the time about &#8220;rushing the season&#8221;.\u00a0 But this one is just fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=1559\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1559\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1559\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Christmas-tree-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Christmas-tree-2.jpg 452w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Christmas-tree-2-226x300.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The plot: protagonist Clara Garrison has recently returned from a failed restaurant venture in Chicago.\u00a0 She&#8217;s superb at managing a restaurant, and dreams of having a second shot at running &#8220;her own place&#8221; in the future.\u00a0 Meanwhile, she&#8217;s managing The Summit, an upscale ski-resort restaurant, for chillingly-slick owner Hugh Peters.<\/p>\n<p>Into the mix comes newly-crowned &#8220;celebrity chef&#8221; Shane Roarke, fresh from his win on a reality-show chef competition.\u00a0 Hugh announces, to his gathered staff, that he has hired Shane as The Summit&#8217;s new chef.<\/p>\n<p>Female staff members swoon, as Shane&#8217;s recent media coverage has led to his title as &#8220;the most eligible bachelor&#8221; around.\u00a0 But no one realizes that a personal quest has brought Shane to the area&#8211;and he isn&#8217;t telling&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=1620\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1620\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1620\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/morning-latte-1.jpg\" alt=\"Latte in a white cup with a heart in the foam\" width=\"600\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/morning-latte-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/morning-latte-1-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/morning-latte-1-332x300.jpg 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Shane and Clara have instant chemistry&#8211;<em>but<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Hugh, spotlighting Clara as his star employee, involves her in a special project&#8211;<em>but<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Clara&#8217;s mom, Lydia, glows over her star turn in a popular magazine, with her latest artisanal gingerbread house.\u00a0\u00a0 Clara&#8217;s best friend, Bonnie, eavesdrops shamelessly and blurts out comments reminiscent of an eager thirteen-year-old. \u00a0 Clara&#8217;s mentors, Jackie and Frank Haven, welcome Shane to their local restaurant as he continues on his mission.\u00a0 And Christmas is coming&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=12516\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12516\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12516\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cookies-with-spatula1-e1541637895919.jpg\" alt=\"tollhouse cookies on foil-covered sheet with spatula\" width=\"452\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Is &#8220;Christmas With a View&#8221; destined to be a Christmas classic?\u00a0 Probably not, but it&#8217;s a good time.\u00a0\u00a0 Its scenario is as predictable as a chocolate-chip cookie recipe, but the characterizations and humor involved make &#8220;getting there&#8221; fun.<\/p>\n<p>Vivica A. Fox&#8217;s Lydia is warm, savvy and ambitious.\u00a0 (I especially liked seeing an &#8220;older&#8221; character with some goals and aspirations, as all too few are represented!)\u00a0\u00a0 Kristen Kurnik gives depth to Bonnie, who is lovable and loyal, with her &#8220;goofy&#8221; side just one facet of her personality.\u00a0 (She also has one of the best lines of the movie, when she exclaims, &#8220;Everybody&#8217;s happy&#8211;that sucks!&#8221; to a morose Clara.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jess Walton and Patrick Duffy are believable and touching as the long-married couple, Jackie and Frank, who still have the &#8220;spark&#8221; between them.<\/p>\n<p>And the two giddy groupies, both named &#8220;Janice&#8221;,\u00a0 are hilarious!\u00a0\u00a0 The breakfast scene, where they corner Shane and he tries politely to extricate himself, is great.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, &#8220;Christmas With a View&#8221; includes a couple of scenes that stretch credibility.\u00a0 (For example, would <em>your<\/em> mom smile and wish you a &#8220;good time&#8221; if you left her on Christmas Eve to go have a drink with your friend at a local bar?)\u00a0 But suspending disbelief, it&#8217;s a ride to be enjoyed&#8211;including the funny &#8220;reality-show&#8221; moment with a volatile fellow-chef competitor, and a wonderful &#8220;secret mission&#8221; sequence which I won&#8217;t ruin by going into detail.<a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?attachment_id=6440\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6440\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6440\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/wreath-alone.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas wreath on white wall\" width=\"690\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Suffice it to say, make some hot chocolate, perhaps grab some tissues (what Christmas movie <em>doesn&#8217;t<\/em> have a lump-in-the-throat scene?) and consider seeing &#8220;Christmas With a View&#8221; her, would the trio still be even on speaking terms?\u00a0 Here, they all seem to remain great friends throughout!).<\/p>\n<p>But, after all, it <em>is<\/em> a Christmas fantasy&#8211;and the plot line gives ol&#8217; Bing a great lead-in to sing that all-time, warmly-imagined Christmas classic&#8211;with a Christmas tree to help him out!<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/cropped-branch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3950\" alt=\"cropped branch\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/cropped-branch.jpg\" width=\"483\" height=\"508\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/cropped-branch.jpg 483w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/cropped-branch-285x300.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Christmas in Connecticut&#8221;, with Barbara Stanwyck.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a good feminist, my first reaction to this one is, &#8220;Thank goodness things have changed!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This classic 1945 &#8220;oh-what-a-tangled-web-we-weave&#8221; comedy manages to be a lot of fun, though.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see if I can keep all the subterfuge straight here.\u00a0 A hospitalized veteran is on strict orders&#8211;no solid food.\u00a0 To get a thick steak, he turns on the charm for a nurse&#8211;who begins hearing wedding bells in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a single and completely undomestic magazine columnist passes herself off, every month, as &#8220;Mrs. Lane&#8221;, the go-to authority on cooking and home economics.\u00a0 Then, fate throws veteran and columnist together&#8211;at a Connecticut farmhouse owned by the columnist&#8217;s would-be fiance.\u00a0 Their meeting happens just as the columnist&#8217;s boss invites himself to visit her and her &#8220;husband&#8221;, for Christmas.\u00a0 (Yes, it&#8217;s convoluted&#8211;and enough to leave any twenty-first century career woman shuddering with &#8220;was-that-really-how-it-was&#8221; horror.)<\/p>\n<p>But, it also manages to be a great time&#8211;and worth seeing just for S.Z. Sakall&#8217;s hilarious and down-to-earth &#8220;Felix&#8221;, who plays the role of favorite uncle\/benevolent meddler to the hilt.\u00a0 His pithy comments at one &#8220;luncheon&#8221; scene are classic!<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dickensian-flowers1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3952\" alt=\"Dickensian flowers1\" src=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dickensian-flowers1.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dickensian-flowers1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dickensian-flowers1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dickensian-flowers1-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/noelophile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dickensian-flowers1-302x300.jpg 302w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Scrooge&#8221; with Albert Finney<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nAn imaginative, musical retelling of Dickens&#8217; masterpiece.\u00a0 The cast has lots of fun with the Victorian world at Christmastime, as local boys taunt Albert Finney&#8217;s sour-faced Scrooge and an exuberant Spirit of Christmas Present shows him the error of his ways over a Christmas drink.<\/p>\n<p>Scrooge&#8217;s journey to a merrier Christmas&#8211;and life&#8211;is stage-managed with the help of rousing songs like &#8220;I Like Life&#8221; and &#8220;December the Twenty-Fifth&#8221;.\u00a0 Be warned, though&#8211;like any good <em>Christmas Carol, <\/em>this one may have you reaching for tissues, especially during the courtship sequence or the later scenes with the Cratchits.\u00a0\u00a0 And I&#8217;ve always found the first &#8220;Thank You Very Much&#8221; number to be a little chilling&#8211;but it&#8217;s very effective, and Scrooge&#8217;s naive reaction provides excellent dark humor.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also one, very well-imagined scene during the Ghost of Christmas Future&#8217;s visit that I wouldn&#8217;t dare spoil here by telling you!\u00a0 Suffice it to say that no other <em>Carol<\/em> interpretation I&#8217;ve seen has ever explored this aspect of Scrooge&#8217;s possible future&#8211;and it winds up being a lot of fun!<\/p>\n<p>Merry Christmas&#8211;grab the popcorn and enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=2941\" title=\"Continue reading &rarr;\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/a><\/div><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/noelophile.com\/?p=3290\">An &#8220;All-American&#8221;
