Zoo Lights’ calendar<\/a> shows ticket availability, every evening until their closing date of Sunday, January 11th, with one exception: New Year’s Eve.\u00a0 They’ll be closed that evening.<\/p>\nAs mentioned in my earlier post<\/a>, L.A. Zoo Lights offers two entry times, each evening: 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm. Tickets are available online, but also available at their box office, which opens at 5:45 pm. Admission gates close at 8:45 pm.<\/p>\nAnd on Thursday, January 8th, L.A. Zoo Lights hosts “L.A. Pride Night”, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community, with added festivities, including an all-ages DJ dance party.<\/p>\n

Christmas in the Victorian village of Ferndale has been described in one word: “Magic”.<\/p>\n
And one of the most magical aspects of their Christmas celebration is coming up.<\/p>\n
On Sunday evening, December 21st, the 33rd Annual Ferndale Lighted Tractor Parade<\/a> is happening on Main Street!<\/p>\nFancifully decorated tractors, tractor-drawn wagons and horse-drawn floats will showcase both the creativity of Ferndale’s local farmers and ranchers, and their pride in their heritage.<\/p>\n

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early.\u00a0 Tractors will line up for judging at 4:30 pm, with judging starting at 5:00 pm.<\/p>\n
Among the categories for which these entries are being considered: “Best Animation”; “Best Animal Entry”; “Oldest Tractor”; “Best Lights”, and “Most Christmas Spirit”.<\/p>\n
(I admit, looking at last year’s pictures on Ferndale Lighted Tractor Parade’s Facebook page, I laughed out loud at the “Judges’ Choice”: a family decked out as cows, pigs and one very stern-looking rooster!)<\/p>\n

Then, the parade starts at 6:00 pm from the top of Main Street–which, incidentally, is the location of the nation’s tallest living Christmas tree.<\/p>\n
As the parade celebrates the imagination and humor of the participants, it also honors the tradition of this close-knit community.\u00a0 \u00a0Every year, the Ferndale Lighted Tractor Parade features a local family as parade Grand Marshals.<\/p>\n
The 2025 Ferndale Lighted Tractor Parade Marshals are fifth- and sixth-generation Ferndale residents!<\/p>\n
“This year, we are honored to celebrate a family whose roots run as deep as the redwoods and whose legacy has helped shape the Eel River Valley for more than a century,” emails Jeannie, from the parade committee.<\/p>\n
“…we proudly honor the Scilacci Family as our Grand Marshals\u2014representing more than 130 years of grit, stewardship, and commitment to the land we call home.”<\/p>\n

Jeannie shares that this legacy began with Pietro and Virginia Scilacci, who immigrated from Corippo, Switzerland to Ferndale in 1893.\u00a0 \u00a0Just two years later, the couple would open their dairy on Waddington Road, laying the foundation for a family legacy that spans nearly every aspect of rural life in the Eel River Valley.<\/p>\n
Dairy farming, goat milk soap making and sawmill operations are just three of those areas in which the Scilacci family have been involved, throughout the decades.<\/p>\n
And now, Jeannie adds, the sixth generation of Scilaccis are beginning to work alongside family members as they carry this tradition forward.<\/p>\n

Most of us love to make things.<\/p>\n
The International Printing Museum<\/a>, in Carson, celebrates that love, year-round–but never more so than at Christmastime.<\/p>\nThey’ll be hosting their annual “Holiday Krazy Krafts Day” this Saturday, December 13th–and you and any fellow kids of your acquaintance (short or tall) are invited!<\/p>\n
From 10 am to 4 pm, visitors will get to create all kinds of fun things.<\/p>\n
Gifts, decorations, and gift tags come to mind, as Museum volunteers will be offering hands-on workshops in book arts including papermaking, rubber stamping, calligraphy, letterpress printing, and typewriting.<\/p>\n

There will also be mini-tours of the Printing Museum, which houses one of the world\u2019s largest and most comprehensive collections of antique printing machinery and graphic arts equipment.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Staff will offer live printing demonstrations, and while you’re there, you might like to ask them about the full schedule of workshops, including printmaking, book arts and screen printing, which the Museum will be offering in 2026.<\/p>\n

<\/a>In Long Beach this weekend, it’s going to be 66 degrees, partly cloudy, and snowing.<\/p>\nAt least, at the Aquarium of the Pacific<\/a>, as they celebrate “Aquarium Holidays<\/a>“!<\/p>\nOnce again, as they introduce the general public to the incredible denizens of our oceans, the Aquarium will be infused with “sea-sonal” magic.\u00a0 As Southern California’s largest aquarium acquaints visitors with more than 12,000 animals, Aquarium Holidays will continue through Sunday, December 21st.\u00a0 And weekends include special features!<\/p>\n
This weekend and next, visitors to the Aquarium will get to see Santa Diver make his annual visit in the Great Hall.<\/p>\n

Tickets to A Noise Within’s<\/a> interpretation of A Christmas Carol\u00a0<\/em>are selling out faster than Old Scrooge running to bar the door against unwelcome ghosts!<\/p>\nThis is the 13th year of the imaginative production, adapted for the stage by Geoff Elliott from Dickens’ beloved classic.\u00a0 \u00a0With original music by Robert Oriol and not a single line of the original work adapted or changed, no wonder Pasadena-based classic theatre company A Noise Within has such a hit on their hands.<\/p>\n

Whenever we’d go to visit her, she had a pantry full of homemade cookies.\u00a0 Chocolate-chip, spritz and meringue.\u00a0 \u00a0One year, she made meringue snowball-like cookies, with sparkly sugar on top, which she called “kisses”.\u00a0 They were the best thing I’d ever tasted.<\/p>\n

Unusual for that time, when Christmas Eve arrived, the station would preempt their regular programming for nonstop Christmas music–old and new.<\/p>\n
All of this is decades in the past–but comes to mind every Christmas when Justin Rudd’s nonprofit Community Action Team celebrates Christmas with their “Joy to the World Free Christmas Concert<\/a>“, along with the “Long Beach Bake-Off and Christmas Cookie Contest for Charities”.<\/p>\nThis year’s concert and bake-off are coming up on Sunday, December 14th–and you’re invited!<\/p>\n

every evening in Solvang Park.<\/p>\n In addition, those mischievous “Nisser” (Christmas gnomes) will be hiding throughout the town, and you’re invited to hunt them down, with the help of a list of clues from Solvang Visitors’ Center.<\/p>\n And New Year’s Eve is going to be something special!\u00a0 Weather permitting, the town hosts a family-friendly “Copenhagen Countdown”, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm!\u00a0 Come celebrate with top 80’s tribute band the Molly Ringwald Project<\/a> and ring in the New Year as Denmark welcomes 2026\u00a0 at 3:00 PM, with a European-style countdown to celebration is coming up.<\/p>\n On Sunday evening, December 21st, the 33rd Annual Ferndale Lighted Tractor Parade<\/a> is happening on Main Street!<\/p>\n Fancifully decorated tractors, tractor-drawn Tractor Parade features a local family as parade Grand Marshals.<\/p>\n The 2025 Ferndale Lighted Tractor Parade Marshals are fifth- and sixth-generation Ferndale residents!<\/p>\n “This year, we are honored to celebrate a family whose roots run as deep as the redwoods and whose legacy has helped shape the Eel River Valley for more than a century,” emails Jeannie, from the parade committee.<\/p>\n Valley.<\/p>\n Dairy farming, goat milk soap making and sawmill operations are just three of those areas in which the Scilacci family have been involved, throughout the decades.<\/p>\n And now, kids of your acquaintance (short or tall) are invited!<\/p>\n From 10 am to 4 pm, visitors will get to create all kinds of fun things.<\/p>\n Gifts, decorations, and gift tags come to mind, as Museum \u00a0Staff will offer live printing demonstrations, and while you’re there, you might like to ask them about the full schedule of workshops, including printmaking, book arts and screen printing, Holidays<\/a>“!<\/p>\n Once again, as they introduce the general public to the incredible denizens of our oceans, the Aquarium will be infused with “sea-sonal” magic.\u00a0 As Southern California’s largest aquarium acquaints visitors with more than 12,000 animals, Aquarium Holidays will continue through Sunday, December 21st.\u00a0 And weekends include special features!<\/p>\n This weekend and mind every Christmas when Justin Rudd’s nonprofit Community Action Team celebrates Christmas with their “Joy to the World Free Christmas Concert<\/a>“, along with the “Long Beach Bake-Off and Christmas Cookie Contest for Charities”.<\/p>\n This year’s concert and bake-off are coming up on Sunday, December 14th–and you’re invited!<\/p>\n Photo by Justin Rudd! | www.JustinRudd.com<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n The 90-minute “Joy to the World” Christmas concert starts at 5 pm at Bay Shore church.\u00a0 Featuring 25 professional musicians, from the Southern California Brass Consortium, playing various seasonal selections.\u00a0 (Last year’s program, listed on Justin’s website<\/a>, ranges from “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” to “A Charlie Brown Christmas”.)<\/p>\n Doors will open at 4:30, and attendees are asked to register online, and be seated by 4:50 pm sharp.\u00a0 \u00a0All ages and sizes of groups are welcome; children may attend if they are VERY well-behaved and very quiet.\u00a0 \u00a0Here’s the link for registration<\/a>.<\/p>\n And each attendee is asked to bring peanut butter, breakfast cereal, boxes of macaroni and cheese, and\/or canned fruit that will be donated to a local food bank.\u00a0 You can also bring packs of men’s socks, to be donated to agencies serving the homeless.<\/p>\n OK, that’s the “music” part.\u00a0 \u00a0Now, about those Zoo Lights<\/strong><\/h4>\n
